Ashton Chowning English 101 Individual Summary October 6, 2016 Reality TV Has Lowered Standards for Television and Society as a Whole Reality cable has numerous different effects on today's generations. Reality cable has not only ruined television but also has ruined America and its people. The catastrophic nonsense of television is causing people to act out as if they are the ‘queen bee’ on one of the many shows, even though they are average people. These television shows called “reality” are teaching teens and adults that their reality should be a drama filled nightmare, full of sympathy and angst. As a result of reality television shows rising, many popular television channels have changed their purposes to accommodate today’s generations. Wolcott explains, “Cable networks originally conceived as cultural alcoves, such as Bravo and A&E (Arts and Entertainment), abandoned any arty aspirations years ago and rebranded themselves as vanity mirrors for the upwardly mobile (Bravo) and police blotters for crime buffs (A&E)” (Wolcott par. 4). Many of the cable networks are cutting their dramas or sitcoms because it cost less to create a reality show. In other words, reality television cost less to create and producers are making an existential amount of money, but the actors and actress are still underpaid. An actor or actress in reality television will get paid on how immature or crazy they act. If an actor or actress does not wish to make a complete fool of himself then he/she will not be treated as the other actors. In conclusion, Reality cable is destroying television, ruining America, and corrupting the minds of today's generations.
